Lizards as Pets: Tips on how to choose and care for pet lizards.

Keeping lizards as pets? Knowledge about the specific species of lizards is very essential to develop that skill you need to harbor lizards as pets.

Having lizards as pets can be fairly simple, but greatly satisfying. They make excellent pets if you learn more about the specific lizard you want to keep. Although many lizards are available to be kept as pets, keep in mind that each species of lizards has its own needs and caring techniques are required accordingly.

First step in keeping lizards as pets is finding the right lizard. Size, health, character, friendliness is some of the factors you might want to look for to find an appealing lizard as pet.  It is best if you do not take lizards out of their natural habitat but buy them from local breeders or a pet store. Captive bred lizards are easier to get, generally parasites free, healthy and adapt easily as pets. Healthy lizards are alert, are rich in color and have a good muscle tone. Lizards with bites and scratches or living under overcrowded filthy conditions may not be healthy. Some rare lizards could be protected by the law and would be illegal to keep them as pets.

For an amateur, I recommend smaller lizards as pets. Caring for smaller lizards like Leopard Gecko is easy they are relatively inexpensive to keep. They don’t need big terrarium or real expensive lighting systems. Large ones like the monitor lizards and Iguanas may get several feet in length when fully grown.  They need big space, lots of care and equipments. This can be real expensive and could be a hassle for you in the future. Keeping these lizards as pets could be real challenging unless you are an experienced reptile keeper. Keep that in mind before choosing lizards as pets.

It is tragic to see many pet lizards deserted either because they are not wanted anymore or the owner cannot take care of them anymore. Keep in mind; Lizards are very intelligent reptiles but not cuddly pets. So, do some research and choose a lizard that you can accommodate. Think about how big they are going to get when fully grown. These factors are essential to consider before keeping pet lizards so that you can enjoy lizards as pets for many years.
